Is Zoom Going to Compromise Our Cybersecurity?

Zoom is perhaps the most used web conferencing app with over 4 lakh business customers all over the world. After the pandemic, it became an integral part of the corporate culture, where 3.3 trillion minutes of meetings have been conducted on Zoom until now. The number indicates its popularity, where everyone finds it convenient to use it to socialize and conduct meetings.

However, if we look at the flip side, using Zoom caused more pain as its security and privacy concerns were kept under scrutiny. Experts found that its much-acclaimed end-to-end encryption was not that secure. Moreover, the app’s policies also allowed it to do whatever it wanted and even had access to users’ data.

Apart from this, there is a running list of issues that makes the corporate world think- is it safe to use Zoom?

In this blog, we will discuss the Zoom security issues and what we can do to make it safer. So, let’s begin!

What are the Cybersecurity Issues with Zoom?

Zoom is vulnerable to cyber-attacks, as we have seen in the past. The best example is the Zoom bombings during the meetings, where a random ID could enter the meeting and eavesdrop on the entire discussion. Since the host had little control over the meeting, they had to reschedule the meeting and rearrange everything.

Other than this, many issues raised concerns over the regular usage of Zoom. Some of these issues are mentioned here, let’s have a look at each one of them:

  1. Phishing and Social Engineering

Phishing and social engineering are some of the biggest threats that you can ever face while using Zoom. The hackers can peep through your home and business. Moreover, it allows cybercriminals to take a screenshots of your crucial information displayed on the screen such as credit card information, bills, your mailbox, a document or a sheet containing sensitive information, and more.

  1. Privacy Issues over Calls

Who can forget random people entering the meeting and disrupting the conversation during the pandemic that made meme material on social media? But, it indicates the dire consequences of using Zoom calls over other mediums of communication. We can see that hackers don’t even need to interact over a Zoom call, but they can create a ruckus and compromise sensitive information.

  1. Glitches with Software

Another biggest issue that we all observed was glitches in the software itself. The common issues included:

  • The webcam or audio not working
  • Echos during the Zoom call
  • Zoom lags and freezes during the meeting
  • No remote control while screen sharing or issues in screen sharing
  • Zoom crashes
  • No email messages from Zoom

The glitches mentioned above could cause data to leak inadvertently and may land you in trouble.

What Can You Do To Protect Yourself from Zoom Vulnerabilities?

If you are a business owner, you can’t afford to take any risk considering the issues with the Zoom app. Here are a few steps you can take to ensure safety from any potential cybersecurity threats:

  • Make sure all attendees of the Zoom meeting have antivirus programs in their systems. So, their device doesn’t get infected.
  • Avoid clicking on suspicious links during and after the Zoom meeting.
  • Always use passcodes for employees to enter the meeting. This way, unfamiliar people can be prevented from entering the conversation.
  • If you notice any unfamiliar people entering the meeting, consider blocking them right away.
  • Avoid revealing or displaying any sensitive information during the Zoom call.
  • Avoid discussing anything confidential while you are on a Zoom call.
  • Keep updating the software; so you don’t have to compromise over the functionality of the app, considering the technical glitches.
  • Lastly, we would recommend you always have an alternative method to conduct socially distanced meetings in case the Zoom app crashes.
